What is the difference between laminate and vinyl flooring?

Laminate: Laminate flooring consists of a fiberboard core with a photographic layer that mimics wood or stone, topped with a protective wear layer. Some laminate brands are less water-resistant than vinyl.

Vinyl: Vinyl flooring is made from synthetic materials, typically polyvinyl chloride (PVC). Vinyl is fully waterproof, making it more suitable for high-moisture areas. Compared to laminate, vinyl often features a softer, more flexible construction.

What does EIR mean?

EIR stands for Embossed-in-Register, a technique used mostly in laminate and vinyl flooring to align the embossed texture with the image of the wood grain or stone pattern, creating a more realistic look and feel.

What does wear layer mean?

The wear layer refers to the top layer of engineered hardwood flooring, also known as the lamella. This top layer of real wood determines how many times the floor can be sanded and refinished, contributing to the floor's durability and longevity.

Wear layer thickness typically ranges from 2mm to 6mm, with 4mm being the industry standard for optimal performance. A thicker wear layer generally allows for more refinishing, making it an important factor to consider when choosing engineered hardwood flooring.

Can engineered  wood floors be sanded?

Yes, engineered wood floors can be sanded and refinished, depending on the thickness of the lamella (the top wood layer). Floors with a lamella thickness of 3.2mm or higher can typically be sanded and refinished multiple times.

One of the key benefits of engineered wood flooring is its ability to be updated over time. Refinishing allows you to refresh the look of your floors to match new décor or eliminate surface scratches without the need to replace them entirely. This feature makes engineered wood a durable and versatile choice for any home.
